Subject:The cleaning power of BLEACH!
Time:9:24 pm.
Mood: tired.
In our martial arts classes we spend a fair amount of time getting thrown on to a mat. This is none too kind to the nice, WHITE gi that I wear, which tends to accrue smudges and marks during a typical night's training.

Why do we use WHITE?!??

Being a conscientious student, I picked up some bleach from the store and have been adding a cap full to the water each time I wash. Unfortunately I've been noticing that the wash hasn't been completely removing some of the more persistent marks. So during my most recent washing this week, I actually read the label and it said to put in THREE-QUARTERS OF A CUP per load. Ah-ha! That must be why I'm still seeing marks after the wash.

I bet you see where this is going...

I didn't really feel like pouring bleach in to one of our kitchen measuring cups, so I just kind of applied the Mark I Eyeball to the task. Bear in mind that I am a little miffed now that I found I've been using the complete wrong amount. Somehow I decide that it makes sense to err in the other direction and I pour in a rather generous amount of bleach.

Success can be a two-edged sword.

Yes! The gi is nice and white once again! Well, except for the end of the sleeves which I forgot to roll down. But otherwise we have emerged victorious, just in time for that night's class. I proudly wore my freshly cleaned gi to class, knowing that I've finally removed the annoying marks and smudges.

Class goes well, though partway through the night I realize that the smell I've been smelling is faintly reminiscent of the public swimming pool. I figure it is just a wee bit of the extra bleach, but a small price to pay for shining whiteness.

CDC|Facts About Chlorine
Immediate signs and symptoms of chlorine exposure

* During or immediately after exposure to dangerous concentrations of chlorine, the following signs and symptoms may develop:
o Coughing
o Chest tightness
o Burning sensation in the nose, throat, and eyes
o Watery eyes

As the night progressed and, I imagine, I began to sweat more and more, the sweat soaked in to my freshly washed gi. The moisture seemed to reactivate the thoroughly bleach soaked gi. By the end of the evening I was extremely short of breath, eyes watering, a bit dizzy, and coughing like crazy. It finally sinks in to my noggin that, "Hey, I really smell like the public swimming pool!", and maybe, JUST MAYBE, I had put a lot more than a little too much bleach in the wash!

Yes, that sunburned feeling all over is also from the bleach.

So to anyone who, like me, may be new to bleach water ratios in the machine wash world, my advice to you would be ... read the directions; then subtract rather than add when in doubt. :)

Oh, and don't drop your guard for any reason during sparring or someone WILL hit kick you in the head.

Subject:The French are evil!
Time:7:45 am.
Mood: content.
There is a French bakery just a few blocks away from our house. I usually avoid it mostly since I know my weakness for yummy, pastry goodness is non-conducive to an overall fitness plan. :)

Every once in a while, on the weekend, I will make the conscious decision to throw caution to the wind and stop in to the bakery. Today was one such day. The shop was in a bit of disorder as they are rearranging, and there was a petite sign saying that selection would be limited for the next two days.

The display case was mostly empty. There wasn't much of anything, and nothing appealing or recognizable. But I figured I would ask if they at least had des croissants or something. He said, "Yes" and went to the back to get them.

They were in the back because they just came out of the oven!

If you ever get the chance, I HIGHLY recommend stopping in to a French bakery first thing in the morning and sampling a warm, buttery, crispy, chewy croissant!! These things are très magnifique!!

The only problem is, now that I know to stop in at 7:30 AM to get a warm, fresh croissant it will be that much tougher to avoid the bakery! :)

Mood: happy.
I forgot to post about the nifty coffee mug chaoticbeauty got me for Father's Day. It is the Aperture Science mug from the game Portal.

The mug is awesome, it holds just as much coffee as my old corporate cup, and I am the awe and envy of all the gaming geeks at the office. :)

Mood: sore.
Last weekend, which was June 14th, 2008 at the time of this writing, a group of us met up at the Oregon Coast to stay for a couple nights. On the middle day, Saturday, we were also going out for a hike in Ecola park.

Some trivia; several portions of The Goonies were filmed at Ecola park.

Subject:What D&D Character Are You?
Time:12:58 pm.
I Am A: Lawful Good Human Paladin/Sorcerer (3rd/2nd Level)

Ability Scores:

Strength-11

Dexterity-14

Constitution-13

Intelligence-16

Wisdom-16

Charisma-12

Alignment:
Lawful Good A lawful good character acts as a good person is expected or required to act. He combines a commitment to oppose evil with the discipline to fight relentlessly. He tells the truth, keeps his word, helps those in need, and speaks out against injustice. A lawful good character hates to see the guilty go unpunished. Lawful good is the best alignment you can be because it combines honor and compassion. However, lawful good can be a dangerous alignment because it restricts freedom and criminalizes self-interest.

Race:
Humans are the most adaptable of the common races. Short generations and a penchant for migration and conquest have made them physically diverse as well. Humans are often unorthodox in their dress, sporting unusual hairstyles, fanciful clothes, tattoos, and the like.

Primary Class:
Paladins take their adventures seriously, and even a mundane mission is, in the heart of the paladin, a personal test an opportunity to demonstrate bravery, to learn tactics, and to find ways to do good. Divine power protects these warriors of virtue, warding off harm, protecting from disease, healing, and guarding against fear. The paladin can also direct this power to help others, healing wounds or curing diseases, and also use it to destroy evil. Experienced paladins can smite evil foes and turn away undead. A paladin's Wisdom score should be high, as this determines the maximum spell level that they can cast. Many of the paladin's special abilities also benefit from a high Charisma score.

Secondary Class:
Sorcerers are arcane spellcasters who manipulate magic energy with imagination and talent rather than studious discipline. They have no books, no mentors, no theories just raw power that they direct at will. Sorcerers know fewer spells than wizards do and acquire them more slowly, but they can cast individual spells more often and have no need to prepare their incantations ahead of time. Also unlike wizards, sorcerers cannot specialize in a school of magic. Since sorcerers gain their powers without undergoing the years of rigorous study that wizards go through, they have more time to learn fighting skills and are proficient with simple weapons. Charisma is very important for sorcerers; the higher their value in this ability, the higher the spell level they can cast.

It was a dark and stormy night, which, while technically true, would be trite and simple if my life were ever put in to book form. Truly, if my life were put in to book form, I would much prefer it to read something like...

For those of you in the NW, unless you've been hiding under a rock you probably know about the wind and rain storm we've been having.

Mikey woke me up this morning to show me a steady drip from the ceiling in the corner of the office / spare bedroom.

Subject:PRESSURE
Time:9:24 am.
Mood: tired.
Woke up this morning feeling extremely groggy. Despite morning routine, breakfast, driving to work, etc. I never really felt awake until roughly two hours after I awoke, and had a cup of coffee in me.

Strangely I don't recall anything adverse during the night's sleep. I didn't stay up extremely late, or wake up at an odd time.

However the weather in the northwest today is quite windy and rainy. There was a bit of rain over the weekend, but the big change seems like it came through last night.

I'm guessing there must be some correlation between the abrupt pressure change from the new weather system, and the inadequate rest I felt I received last night. Thinking this must be true for some other folks around the office, too, as there seems to be more than than the typical 'Moon-days' going on.

Subject:*NOT* buying BioShock
Time:9:19 am.
Mood: pissed off.
There has been a lot of noise about a new game entitled BioShock from 2KGames. Despite the graphic nature of the game, I was still intrigued by reviews of the complex storyline and flexible game play.

I installed the demo recently, but didn't play it right away because I wanted to try it when The Boy© was not up and about. (He would definitely sneak a peek if he could.)

Finally I was able to play the game for about 15 minutes, but had to quit before getting very far. I then went poking around online about the game, and one of the first things to come up is how they have included the SecuRom copy protection scheme in the game. In fact, they have put the SecuRom copy protection in to some of the DEMO versions of the game.

If you do a search for SecuRom you will find a LOT of controversy over whether it is a rootkit or not. I am not a security expert, but I feel I am fairly knowledgeable about computer technology, and I do not like the implications of this particular "copy protection". Coupled with Sony's propensity for shady software practices in the past I am disinclined to believe their good intentions, if they exist, for this service.

I firmly believe in "voting with my dollar" and in this instance that is exactly what I will do. I have no intentions of ever purchasing this, or any, game which includes such questionable software. I strongly urge anyone else who find this type of behavior offensive to do the same.

I do not begrudge the software industry a right to make profit or attempt to protect their property from piracy. But their actions cannot in turn violate the good faith and trust of their consumers. Clandestinely installing hidden software on my computer without my consent or knowledge is invasive and morally reprehensible.

Subject:You can't know the power of the Dark Side
Time:10:20 am.
Mood: guilty.
Star Wars Galaxies is having free 14-day trials right now, and you can download the entire game if you do. (It's 4.5 GB, so you need a good connection, realistically.)

If you used to play SWG, you can use your old account and characters again for the trial just by putting in your old username and password.

There have been some BIG changes to the game, and I'm not sure if I like all of them, but I must admit parts of it are definitely fun again. My big complaint is that, with the removal of professions in favor of "classes", they took away the ability to mix and match things like tailoring with combat on a single character. That being said, they opened up multiple characters slots on a single server, which kind of makes up for it.

So if you're so inclined, and you can brave the 4.5 GB download, give it a shot and give me a /tell (Rekesh), or Michael (Nini), on Intrepid. We might only play for a bit, but if enough interest is there, who knows?

Subject:My Perfect Playlist
Time:6:47 pm.
Mood: anxious.
For those of you currently inhabiting the Portland area, you may be familiar with a local radio station called 947fm. Weeknights they have an awesome DJ who started playing listener's playlists, five songs plus a few alternates, beginning at 5pm for the drive home. They had a huge response to this. In fact the program was so popular they actually started inviting listeners in to the radio station to "guest" their playlist!

After much deliberation, and hem'ing and haw'ing, I finally put together MY Perfect Playlist and submitted it to the station. I had no idea how hard it would be to narrow down my entire library of music to just FIVE choices. Sadly I found that my musical tastes seem to change on a daily, if not hourly, basis. It finally came to the point where I had to simply say, "Enough!", and just send in the list I had prepared.

So... I'll be in this Friday, April 13th, to do the My Perfect Playlist in person! :)

I've really been looking forward to this for a while, and have been very anxious to go in. I never had any trepidation about going in and being "on the air"; the situation just didn't really bother me. That is, it did not bother me, until the actual date was set.

Now I find myself just a little apprehensive about going in. Will I sound like an idiot? Will I pull an Imus and say something completely crass? Will I just be a pathetically boring fanboy who makes a complete ninny of them self?

I know these things never go as one envisions them in one's head, and I've been trying very hard not to set any expectations. I think if I go in very nervous and worried, that I will create a self-fulfilling prophecy. But if I simply relax and go with it, that it will be a very cool experience.

What songs are on my playlist? Tune in Friday at 5:00 PM to 94.7 FM (or listen online) to find out. :)

Subject:The Power of Wii
Time:6:01 am.
Mood: tired.
After the F. Meyer fiasco with the Wii sale, we were pretty dejected. chaoticbeauty did some digging and found out that the local Target was getting something like 135 game systems. They were not doing the midnight sale, but did open at 8:00 AM. I was not so enamored of getting the game that I was willing to stay all night there, but I did roust everyone at 5:00 AM to head down to the store.
